U of C scientists have made a huge advancement in the study of antimatter. Rob Thompson and Makoto Fujiwara have come up with a way to produce antihydrogen atoms that are cold enough to be trapped and studied.

Thompson, associate professor in Department of Physics and Astronomy at U of C, is a co-investigator in the ALPHA Collaboration, one of two scientific teams racing to be the first to capture and study antimatter. U of C's presence in ALPHA also includes Fujiwara, an adjunct professor at in physics and astronomy, as well as Calgary graduate students Richard Hydomako and Tim Friesen.
