If I am on sabbatical and my student is going to defend, do I need to be there in person?

"Before the leave commences, the supervisor, the interim supervisor (if applicable), the student and the Graduate Coordinator, must decide where the various responsibilities lie. A written record of the decisions must be kept at the program level. It must be noted that the attendance of the supervisor at an oral examination is non-delegable. The supervisor must make arrangements, if necessary at his or her personal expense, to attend the oral examination (candidacy or final oral) of his or her student if the examination occurs during the period of leave."

What am I expected to pay for one graduate student per year?

For students without major scholarships, the department will pay 1 and 1/2 TA's during the fall/winter terms.  As a supervisor you are required to top-up the student's pay during the term they are receiving the 1/2 TA. For a PhD student, the minimum top-up is $3400 and for a MSc student the minimum top-up is $3000. You are also required to pay summer support. The minimum amount is $6,000 for May - August.
