Graduate students at the University of Calgary must pay general fees and tuition fees each year, as set by the university.
All students admitted into our full-time, thesis-based graduate programs are guaranteed a minimum level of financial support when they are offered admission to our programmes. The exact value of the minimum level of support depends on the degree being pursued, the research area, and the academic standing of the student. If you are admitted to our department, your letter offering admission will specify your minimum level of support. The departmental minimum is just over $20,000, with the PhD minimum support level being slightly higher than the MSc minimum support level.
This support generally takes the form of a combination of Graduate Assistantships - Teachings and Graduate Research Assistantships. Financial support is generally provided for 2 years for MSc students and four years for PhD students, the expected maximum time length of the degrees. Funding beyond this time window is handled on a case-by-case basis.
Support levels are quoted as minimum amounts because once in a program students are encouraged to apply for both internal and external scholarship awards, which, if successful, will result in a higher funding level for the student. There are departmental, Faculty of Graduate Studies, university, provincial, and national awards for which students may apply.
