Graduate Awards & Scholarships


Internal awards are those that are granted by the university, faculty, or department. They include:


Provided by the PHAS department
Requirements: Approximately 10-12 hours of teaching per week
Value: GAT's - $8,762.97 per term

Funding from Supervisors (Scholarship)

Provided by the student's supervisor
Value: minimum $4000 awarded when topping up teaching during a term.  $7500 for the spring/summer period.

Graduate Awards Competition (GAC) – 2017

With one application the following scholarships are awarded through this annual competition. Your application must indicate which one(s) you are applying for!

  • Open Doctoral Scholarships
  • Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF) Scholarships
  • Special Awards
  • Bursaries

Application Process:  Access the application and information:

Before you apply for the awards/bursaries, please make sure you meet the criteria for each award/bursary you apply for and check the date on the website for when it is due.

Complete and email the application to, by the program deadline of  MONDAY, December 12, 2016 - 4:30 p.m.   

In addition to the application and to assist the Graduate Affairs Committee with ranking applications, all students who submit applications for the Graduate Awards Competition must also submit their Research Contributions.   Complete and email your Research Contributions to  Please note your research contributions MUST BE NAMED AS BELOW and indicate the total number from each category on the form.

Name your file: yymmdd_LastName_FirstName.pdf or .doc    Date Format:  Year/Month/Day

Reference Letters:   Please have your referees email their completed reference letters to Emailed reference letters must come from an institutional address – NOT gmail, hotmail, yahoo, etc.  You must provide one referee with Reference Form 1 and a second referee with Reference Form 2. The process of merging your application into a single PDF document for adjudication requires two separate forms.

Transcripts:  Transcripts printed by students from their Student Centre will not be accepted. You may contact the Graduate Program Coordinator (Tracy Korsgaard) and request copies of transcripts from originals on including UofC transcripts. Please allow plenty of notice as this is a very time consuming. Do not ask for them to be printed on the due date.

Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures (AITF) Scholarships:

  • New students starting a graduate program May 2017 or September 2017, deadline to the Department is WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 2017 - 4:30 P.M.
  • Continuing students deadline to the Department is MONDAY, DECEMBER 12, 2016 – 4:30 P.M.

PHAS Internal Awards and Queen Elizabeth II MSc/PhD Competition

Awarded by the Graduate Affairs Committee using money received from the Faculty of Graduate Studies Scholarship Awards

Applicants must submit an updated/new copy of their research Research Contributions.  Information on these awards is sent to Graduate Students in January or February of each year. 

Deadline: Research Contributions are due to the Department on Monday, March 6, 2017

The Canadian Corporation for University Space Science Scholarship

Awarded annually to senior graduate students (i.e. non available to first-year students) whose area of specialization relates to education in space science.
Applicants are nominated by the Institute of Space Imaging Science 
Value: $750

Alumni Award

Awarded annually to a graduate student teaching assistant in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, chosen by the department based on student and faculty input.
All graduate student teaching assistants will be considered.
No application is necessary.
Value: $500

The Faculty of Science Fellowship

Awarded annually to a senior PhD student, or Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Special Consideration is given to applicants in the areas of Astrophysics and Space Physics.
Applications available from the department office.
Value: $6000
Deadline: Applications submitted to the department by April 15


Tri-Council Awards (NSERC, CIHR, CGS-MSFSS)

The Tri-Council is made up of three granting agencies that provide research funding for high caliber Master’s and doctoral students:

  • Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)
  • Canada Graduate Scholarship - Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS)

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships  (Vanier CGS) were created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting those who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement and exemplary leadership.

The scholarship is intended to support students broadening their research horizons.  Applicants who have completed both an undergraduate and Master’s degree at the University of Calgary will not be considered.

Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures

The Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures (AITF) Scholarships support high caliber students undertaking a full-time graduate program in areas of research important to Alberta.

Your research must be related to Information and Communication Technology (ICT)Nano, or Omics (Omics consists of: Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Transcriptomics and Regulomics); in and of themselves, or additionally supporting the areas of Health, Bio-industries, or Energy and the Environment.

Scholarships are available to successful applicants for various situations including: full scholarships for Canadian students who do not already hold an external peer-reviewed scholarship; full scholarships for international students studying in a participating Alberta university; and, top-up scholarships for Canadian NSERC award holders.
