Fees & Funding

Minimum and average funding

Funding for graduate students generally comes from a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships (funding from your supervisor), and scholarships. The department guarantees a minimum level of funding, which is currently over 24,644 CAD per year. This base funding is guaranteed for 2 years for MSc students and for 4 years for PhD students. However, various federal, provincial, university and department scholarships are available for well-performing students. As a consequence, the average graduate student funding is typically higher.

Tuition and fees

Graduate students have to pay tuition and fees. The department covers the tuition for students who have major scholarships (e.g. NSERC, AITF). International students have to pay differential fees and tuition. However, university and department funding is available to cover the difference in many cases.

Awards and Scholarships

Scholarships and award applications are part of the graduate student professionalization process. As such, the Department of Physics and Astronomy expects graduate students to apply for scholarships and awards for which they are eligible. View our opportunities.

Graduate Assistantships

Whether you are a graduate student with regular funding, or a student with an externally-funded prestige scholarship, you are likely to do some teaching as part of your graduate degree, providing you with both some useful professional experience and some financial support.  Find out more.
