Physics and Astronomy
The Department of Physics and Astronomy (PHAS) at the University of Calgary is involved in many outreach activities geared toward raising scientific awareness and literacy in the community, and encouraging the youth of Calgary to pursue careers in science.
Each year PHAS participates in the university's Campus Fair event with fun demos set up and members of the department present to answer your questions about our programs, community events or other items of interest.
Whether you are in Grade 12 and are figuring out how to apply to the U of C, are in grade 11 and doing some research on post-secondaries, or are just looking to get more information on our programs, faculties and campus, we invite you to join us on Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 10:00 am - 3:00 pm for the University Open House in the MacEwan Hall Conference Centre. Come and speak with professors, staff and current students from a wide variety of programs and services available on campus. This is a great opportunity to gather information and discover why the University of Calgary is right for you.
Through the Calgary Science Network, members of PHAS get invited to schools to make special presentations to students about curriculum related topics. PHAS members also assist the CSN with presentations at their annual Science Symposium, helping to keep Calgary's science teachers up to date on topics in physics and astronomy.
The PHAS department participated in the 2007 DAMOP Education Workshop for science teachers, the annual Meeting of the APS Division of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics, held by the American Physical Society. The 2012 DAMOP conference is June 4-8, Orange County, CA. See the event website for details as they become available if you are interested in attending.
